AKRON, Ohio — For the third time in five years, the Akron Zips will be part of March Madness.

The team and plenty of fans packed the James A. Rhodes Arena Sunday night to find out where the Zips would be heading.

They erupted after finding out that the team is a No.12-seed and will make the short drive to Auburn Hills, Mich., to take on Virginia Commonwealth University on Thursday.

The Rams’ head coach is Shaka Smart, one of Zips head Coach Keith Dambrot’s former assistants.

“We’ve already told ourselves a million times we’d never play,” said Dambrot. “You know, so it’s fitting everyone keeps putting us up against each other. I guess they’re trying to destroy the relationship.”
