CLEVELAND – After it was announced Friday that the Cleveland Cavaliers had parted ways with David Blatt, it was also announced that Tyronn Lue would be taking his place as head coach.

Here are 10 things to know about the newest head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers:

  1. Lue, 38, has been working with the Cavaliers since June of 2014, when he was hired as an assistant coach. He and David Blatt were both finalists for the head coaching position.
  2. He is now the 20th head coach for the Cavs.
  3. He previously worked as an assistant coach with Doc Rivers for the Los Angeles Clippers.
  4. Before the Clippers, Lue spent four years working for the Boston Celtics. His last two years were spent as an assistant coach for Rivers.
  5. He began his time in Boston as the Director of Basketball Development.
  6. Lue was drafted by the Denver Nuggets as the 23rd pick in the 1998 NBA Draft.
  7. He played 11 seasons in the NBA.
  8. He spent time with the Los Angeles Lakers, Washington Wizards, Orlando Magic, Houston Rockets, Atlanta Hawks and Dallas Mavericks throughout his career.
  9. He won two NBA Championships, in 2000 and 2001, while he was with the Lakers.
  10. He played college basketball at the University of Nebraska.

In a release Friday, GM David Griffin said Lue is in a good place as he takes over the head coaching position.

“I am more than confident that he will have the pulse of our team and the buy-in required to enhance the habits and culture that will foster the kind of identity and results we must have.”

Team owner Dan Gilbert backed up that statement as well.

“Our ownership group supports David Griffin’s decision. We would like to thank David Blatt for his work over these past two seasons where the Cavaliers transformed into a playoff team after a rebuilding phase. We believe Tyronn Lue is the right coach at the right time to put us in the best position to take the last but most challenging step to complete our mission to deliver Cleveland an NBA Championship.”
