SHAKER HEIGHTS, Ohio – Many consider Shaker Heights quarterback Jimmie Pope one of the best dual-threat signal callers in Northeast Ohio, and Cleveland Central Catholic got a first-hand look at Pope’s unique talents in a week three clash.
The 6’4’’ senior accounted for six total touchdowns Saturday, four through the air, and another pair on the ground as the Red Raiders routed the Ironmen, 49-20, in a non-league game.
Pope was 13-20 passing for 260 yards and those season-high 4 touchdowns, one each to Melran Leach, Nolan Jackson-Daniel, Derek Burgess and Curtiss Perkins.
Pope also gained 71 yards on just five carries, scoring twice in the second quarter as Shaker overcame a slow start to take a 21-12 lead at halftime.
The senior leader also got plenty of help from a solid Shaker defense and junior tailback Ramses Owens who gained 111 yards on 15 attempts and scored the Red Raiders other touchdown.
Central quarterback Taz Pauldo put the Ironmen ahead early with a short touchdown run, and added a second score in the second quarter. However, the junior finished with just -1 yard rushing on 11 carries, and he struggled in the passing game, completing just 10 of 28 attempts for 92 yards.
Shaker Heights (2-1) hosts former Lake Erie League for Parma (1-2) next Saturday, September 15.
Cleveland Central Catholic (1-2) returns home to Stefanski Stadium, Saturday, to welcome the Lancers of Gilmour Academy (0-3).
