CANTON, Ohio (WJW) — It was a tough night in Canton for the Massillon Tigers football team.

Cincinnati La Salle won the 4th state title in the school’s history by beating the Tigers 34-17 to claim the Division II title at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium.

Massillon was in the title game for the second year in a row and came up short again.

Massillon has not won a state title since the computer playoff system was installed in the early 1970s.

La Salle jumped out to a 14-3 lead in the first half when Cam Porter took a direct snap and scored from a short distance.

Two long touchdown passes from quarterback Aiden Longwell helped Massillon stay close.   La Salle led 21-17 at the half.

In the second half, La Salle got another touchdown run from Porter and two field goals to take a 34-17 lead.  Massillon could not answer.

34-17 was the final score.

Massillon lost last season in the state title game to the Akron Hoban Knights.

The championship weekend in Canton continues with 3 games each on Friday and Saturday. The Kirtland Hornets will be playing for the Division 5 title Saturday night at 8 p.m.
