CLEVELAND --Week 2 of Friday Night Touchdown is setting up to be a hot one. As the temperatures rise, so does the concern for dehydration and heat stroke. That's why teams this week have been preparing a game plan to beat their opponent and the heat.

"It was a cool summer for us so we are going to see how we are going to handle that part of it tomorrow," said Mentor head football coach Steve Trivisonno.

High school football teams are busy this week stocking up on water and sports drinks.

"Hydration is incredibly important and you want to hydrate with something that has electrolytes in it, so something like Gatorade," said Leanne Chrisman MD of MetroHealth.

Football players at Mentor High School are required to carry a water bottle with them at all times throughout the school day, if they are caught by a football coach without one, they are disciplined at practice.

"As you go into school, you need to have a water bottle with you and you need to be drinking all day. Drink your water, fill it up between classes and go get some more," Trivisonno said.

When the heat is on, like this week, the equipment comes off. Coaches are trying to limit the amount of exposure in the elements while wearing several pounds of gear including a helmet. The best solution for players, a good nights rest.

"Make sure you get enough sleep because if you're tired it will make you even more fatigued during the practice especially after a long school day," said Mentor running back, Alex Mathews.

The good news, in a few weeks, most players will be looking for the warm temperatures when they are bundled up battling another kind of element.

The OHSAA officials also play a role, they give mandatory water breaks throughout the game to ensure everyone stays hydrated and keeps cool when the heat is on.
