SHAKER HEIGHTS, Ohio – Shaker Heights has not been the Region 1 Playoffs since 2005, but the 2012 Red Raiders seem determined to put an end to the seven year drought.
Shaker’s (5-1) dynamic duo of quarterback Jimmie Pope and tailback Ramses Owens put on another show Saturday, combining for five touchdowns as the Red Raiders routed Cuyahoga Falls (3-3) 49-9 in a non-league game.
Pope finished 5 for 8 passing for 160 yards and two touchdowns, in just two quarters of play. The dual threat signal caller rarely had to leave the pocket against the Tigers, because Owens played his best game of the season, rushing 11 times for 138 yards and three touchdowns, all in the first half.
Shaker’s defense also put points on the board, courtesy of Keith McRae and Hombre Thomas, who returned an interception and a fumble, respectively, for touchdowns, extending the Raiders lead to 49-0, before Cuyahoga Falls finally got on the board with a safety and a late touchdown, to close out the scoring.
Even with the win, Shaker is still fighting for the eighth and final spot in the Region 1 Playoffs. The Raiders stay home next Saturday to host Valley Forge (1-5).
The loss hurts Cuyahoga Falls’ chances for a playoff berth in Region 2, but the Tigers still fave three teams with winning records, including unbeaten North Royalton (6-0), so they still have an outside shot.
