Friday Night Touchdown Monitor
CLEVELAND — Week #9 of Friday Night Touchdown continued Saturday with two outstanding games in Division I: #3 St. Edward faced the new #1 team in the AP Poll, Cincinnati Archbishop Moeller, while #6 St. Ignatius hosted Cincinnati St. Xavier.

It was a tale of two halves at Lakewood Stadium, as St. Edward raced out to a 24-0 lead. The Eagles took a 38-14 lead into halftime, thanks to 175-yards rushing and three touchdowns from Andrew Dowell.

But the Crusaders clawed their way back into the game – scoring the first 21 points of the second half and cutting the Eagles’ lead to 38-35 early in the 4th quarter.

That’s when St. Edward QB Brett Kean hit Alex Stump on two huge pass plays. The first on third-down and long gave the Eagles a new set of downs. Four plays later, Kean hit Stump again for a 17-yard touchdown that gave St. Edward a little breathing room, and eventually a 45-42 victory.

With the win, St. Edward improves to 7-1 and climbs to the top of the Region 1 Playoff race. The Eagles wrap up the regular season next Saturday against Eastern Christian Academy (7-1) from Maryland.

A week after handing St. Edward its first loss of the season, #6 St. Ignatius struggled against visiting St. Xavier, but had a chance to win the game in the final minute, until tailback Mike Vitale was stopped inches shy of a first down on a critical 4th and 1 play.

The defensive stand lifted St. Xavier to a hard-fought 13-10 win that keeps the Bombers alive in the Region 2 Playoff race.

The loss drops St. Ignatius to 5-4. The Wildcats finish the regular season at home against the Pinehurst School Prep Academy from Ontario, Canada.

Week #9 also featured a rare battle of unbeatens at the top of the Suburban League. A year after Highland squeaked by Nordonia on a last second field goal, the Hornets and Knights both came into the game with identical 9-0 records.

Nordonia jumped out to an early lead, thanks to an interception return for a touchdown in the first quarter, but then #8 Highland got going. The Hornets scored 28 of the next 31 points and led 28-10, before Nordonia clawed back with 15-unanswered. But the Knights could not get over the hump and Highland held on to win 28-25.

Highland (9-0) has already locked up a home playoff game in Region 4, and if the Hornets can beat Cloverleaf (2-7) in the regular season finale, they will clinch the outright Suburban League Championship.

Next up for Nordonia (8-1) is another tough test, when Wadsworth (8-1) comes to town in Week #10. The Knights have also clinched a Playoff bert in Region 4, but will need a win to secure a home game in the opening round.

Kirtland (9-0) extended its historic winning streak to 44 consecutive regular season games, with a 52-12 victory over Beachwood (6-3). If the Hornets can knock off Independence (6-3) in the season finale, they will complete their fourth straight undefeated regular season. Kirtland is ranked #1 in Division VI and clinched another Playoff berth in Region 19.

St. Vincent-St. Mary (9-0) showed why it is the new #1 team in the FOX 8 Top 8. The Irish won their 15th consecutive game and avenged their only loss in the last calendar year, holding on to win at Massillon 28-23. The reigning Division III State Champions travel to Ursuline in Week #10. A win will clinch the AP Poll Championship and lock up the top spot in the challenging Region 7 Playoff race.
