CLEVELAND — The opening weekend of the 2013 high school football season continued Saturday with a battle of top-5 teams in the FOX 8 Top 8.
Top-ranked St. Edward raced out to a 23-0 halftime lead, then had to hold on, after #4 Glenville scored all 24 of its points in the third quarter.
But the Eagles got a big touchdown run from Andrew Dowell and a late interception from Pat Riley to seal a 40-24 win.
The Eagles’ defense was dominant in the first half, forcing the Tarblooders into a three-and-out on their first possession. Michigan recruit Shaun Crawford blocked Glenville’s punt and the ball rolled out of the end zone for a safety.
On the ensuing possession, St. Eds new QB Brett Kean threw the first of his two touchdown passes, to DJ Thomas and the Eagles led 9-0 after the first quarter.
Keane also scored on the ground, powering into the end zone from one yard out, to extend the lead, which grew to 23-0 at halftime, after Dowell’s 24-yard touchdown run.
Glenville finally hit its stride in the third quarter, scoring all four of its touchdowns. RBs Davon Anderson and Quan Robinson did most of the damage on the ground.
The duo combined for more than 200-yards rushing, and two touchdowns, lead a comeback that cut St. Eds’ lead to 33-24, before Dowell’s second touchdown put the game away.
#1 St. Edward will play Akron Buchtel (0-1) next Saturday at Lakewood Stadium.
#4 Glenville faces another tough road test when it travels to Solon (1-0) on Friday.
