STOW, Ohio – Norwayne is the defending State Champion in Division IV, and Friday night, the Bobcats played like a team determined to repeat. Norwayne (13-0) raced out to 42-7 lead over unbeaten Brookfield (12-1), and then survived a late rally to win Region 13, 49-28.
Senior quarterback Joe Dreher threw a career-high five touchdown passes, including three in the decisive second quarter, as the Bobcats broke up a tight game, to take a 28-7 lead into halftime.
Kaleb Harris was on the receiving end of two of Dreher’s touchdown passes. Richie Smith also caught a pair, and Brady Berger scored twice, one on the ground, and once on a short reception.
Quarterback Jeremy Quinlan tried to lead Brookfield back several times, tossing three touchdown passes in the second half, as the top-seeded Warriors closed the deficit to 42-21. Then, after a Norwayne punt, Brookfield drove deep into Bobcats’ territory, where a costly turnover all but ended their season.
Norwayne promptly marched down the field, and Berger’s short scoring run made it 49-21 and put the game away.
With the win, Norwayne advances to its second consecutive Division IV State Semifinal. The Bobcats will likely face undefeated St. Clairsville (13-0) which held off Johnstown-Monroe 37-29 in the Region 15 Final.
Brookfield finishes the season 12-1.
