SHAKER HEIGHTS, Ohio – The Red Raiders play most of their games under the Saturday afternoon sun, instead of the Friday Night Lights, but Shaker Heights’ explosive offense always finds a way to shine bright. Dual threat quarterback Jimmie Pope continued his record-setting season, in week seven, throwing four touchdown passes, as the Red Raiders routed Valley Forge, 55-0.
Pope was 11-19 for 234 yards and spread the wealth, tossing scoring passes to four different receivers, Vance Adams, Derek Burgess, Keith McCrae and Curtiss Perkins, and junior tailback Ramses Owens was the workhorse out of the backfield again, adding two scores on just 11 carries. Brian Jones and Greg Claytor also found the end zone, and Jones even threw a touchdown pass to Melran Leach.
Pope has thrown for nearly 1400-yards and 19 touchdowns, as the Red Raiders have run off six straight wins, after losing a heart breaker to Solon in their season opener.
But despite its potent offense and a defense that has pitched three shutouts, Shaker Heights (6-1, 2-0 in NEO) is still on the outside looking in at the Region 1 playoff race. They sit just percentage points behind Cleveland Heights for the eighth and final playoff spot.
Shaker hits the road next week to battle Brush (4-3, 2-0) for first place in the Northeast Ohio Conference’s Lake Division.
Valley Forge (1-6, 0-2) travels to Garfield Heights to battle the Bulldogs (2-5, 1-1).
