TAMPA, Fla. – The Tampa Bay Buccaneers topped the Cleveland Browns 13-12 in game three of the preseason.
The game kicked off Friday night at 7:30 in Tampa and the Browns were first to put points on the board.
Placekicker Austin Seibert kicked a 54-yard field goal during the first quarter.
He then kicked a 36-yard field goal in the second quarter, increasing Cleveland’s lead 6-0.
This followed by yet another field goal by Seibert, this one at 30 yards, leaving the Bucs behind 9-0 at halftime.
Tampa Bay put points on the board halfway through the third quarter when placekicker Cairo Santos made a 23-yard field goal. The score was 9-3, with Cleveland still in the lead.
Then, with just 19 seconds left to play in the third, Bucs’ tightend Jordan Leggett scored a touchdown on a 20-yard pass from quarterback Ryan Griffin. Tampa Bay entered the fourth quarter with a 10-9 lead.
The Browns took back the lead during the fourth quarter when Seibert made another field goal, this one at 35 yards. The score was 12-10.
However, Tampa Bay’s placekicker Matt Gay made a 21-yard field goal with 18 seconds left to play. The Buccaneers were victorious over the Browns 13-12.
Regardless of the loss, the Browns defense was spectacular in the first half. They came up with three sacks in the first quarter. Defensive end Olivier Vernon had two sacks on the night and the defense had 5 total in the first half.
Seibert, the fifth round pic, got all the kicking duties Friday night. Seibert was 3-3 in the first half of the game.
Quarterback Baker Mayfield got his wish to play the entire first half. He was without his top receivers and finished the night 10-26, 72 yards and 1 interception.
This was the Browns first loss of the 2019 preseason. They were previously victorious over the Washington Redskins (30-10) and the Indianapolis Colts (21-18).
Friday’s game was a dress rehearsal for Cleveland’s starters as they are not expected to play at all next Thursday against the Detroit Lions. Friday night served as the final tune-up before opening day in September.
