BALTIMORE, Maryland – The Ravens have topped the Browns 26-24 in their final game of the season.

While most people were enjoying time with their families over the Christmas holiday, the Cleveland Browns had a short break and then got back to work to prepare for their final game of the season.

Before the game, the Cleveland Browns stood in the Baltimore Ravens’ path from reaching the playoffs for the first time in three years.

That served as motivation for the Browns.

“We would obviously love to have this one and end the season on a very, very high note,” rookie quarterback Baker Mayfield said in a press conference this week. “Obviously, disappointing somebody else’s playoff hopes, that is motivation, too.”

The Ravens started Lamar Jackson ahead of veteran Joe Flacco at quarterback.  Lamar Jackson beat out Baker for the Heisman in 2016. Of course, Baker won it in 2017.

The Cleveland Browns kicked off against the Ravens in Baltimore at 4:35 p.m. Sunday, with a chance to end the Ravens’ shot at a postseason.

The Baltimore Ravens were first to score during Sunday’s game after turning Browns’ quarterback Baker Mayfield’s 12th interception of the season into a 38-yard field goal kicked by Ravens’ Justin Tucker. The score was 3-0.

However, the Browns quickly responded with a touchdown from Breshad Perriman on a 28-yard pass from Mayfield, raising the score 7-3. This is Mayfield’s 25th touchdown pass of the season.

Then, Mayfield locked up the Browns’ rookie single-season passing yards record on a pass to wide receiver Antonio Callaway.  The previous record holder, Brandon Weeden, started 15 games.

The Ravens, however, refused to trail behind the Browns for long.  Baltimore took back the lead when quarterback Lamar Jackson rushed 25-yards for goal, raising the score 10-7, where it remained until the end of the first quarter.

Runningback Nick Chubb also reached a milestone during the first quarter. He became the first Cleveland Browns player to rush 1,000 rushing yards in a rookie season.

Unfortunately, Chubb lost five yards on his final carry of the game and it dropped him back below the 1,000-yard mark.

The Ravens were first to put up points in the second quarter when Jackson rushed 8-yards for a touchdown.  Baltimore led Cleveland 17-7.

Then the Ravens put more points on the board when Tucker kicked a 35-yard field goal, leaving the Browns to trail behind.  Meanwhile, Mayfield is spending a lot of time on the sidelines while the Ravens continue to play keep away.

Cleveland had the opportunity to decrease their point deficit as the second quarter neared an end, but placekicker Greg Joseph kicked a 46-yard field goal and missed. The score remained 20-7 at the end of the first half.

The Browns entered the third quarter playing up hill, however their offense had a good start.

Jarvis Landry scored a touchdown on a 48-yard pass from Mayfield, leaving the Browns to only trail behind Baltimore by 6 points.  Also with this 26th pass, Mayfield joined Peyton Manning and Russell Wilson for most passing touchdowns by a rookie.

Then, Baltimore responded by kicking a 44-yard field goal, increasing the Browns’ point deficit and raising the score 23-14, where it remained until the end of the third quarter.

Cleveland kicked off the fourth quarter with a kick — a 35-yard kick from Joseph that resulted in a field goal. The score was 23-17 at this point.

During the fourth quarter Larry Ogunjobi was cleared to return to the game after being evaluated for a concussion during the third quarter.

Then the Ravens kicked another field goal, increasing their lead yet again. The Browns trail behind 26-17.

Then Baker Mayfield broke the rookie record with his 27th touchdown pass to Antonio Callaway. The score was now 26-24.

The final score was 26-24.

The Browns end the 2018 season with a 7-8-1 record.
