CLEVELAND (AP/WJW) — Baker Mayfield came back after hurting his left shoulder to throw a touchdown pass and run for a TD, leading the Cleveland Browns to a 31-21 win over Houston.

“Obviously, not an ideal situation,” Mayfield told reporters following the game, talking about his injury. “Trying to force him back inside. I think he realized it was me standing right there so he put his head down and ran right after me. It kind of popped in and out, but I will be good. Nothing too serious.”

The Texans were in the game until starting quarterback Tyrod Taylor injured his hamstring.

Prior to the game, Browns Head Coach Kevin Stefanski had asked fans planning to tailgate in the Muni Lot to make sure to be in their seats in time for kickoff.

“A good team win,” Stefanski said following the game. “I thought the crowd was outstanding and in their seats right at the kickoff so I hope they are back at the Muni Lot already but nice job. They helped affect the game. They did a nice job.”

Stefanski was complimentary of his team, but said they still had a way to go.

“It was not always clean, especially in that first half,” he said. “I did not think it was really clean football, but we had guys step up and make plays really throughout the game. On the injury front, (WR) Jarvis (Landry) has an MCL injury. We will get images of that in the morning. (QB) Baker (Mayfield) has a left shoulder injury. He is sore, but he gutted it out. He did a nice job.”

Landry had to come out of the game due to his injury.

“I feel like we have had to preach the next man up mentality quite a bit,” Mayfield said. “We have been trying to tell D-Felt (RB Demetric Felton) that he needs to be studying (WR) Jarvis’ (Landry) stuff quite a bit, just because when they get the ball in their hands, good things happen. Obviously, that showed today. You never want to lose a player in the caliber of Jarvis but even more so the leadership he brings.”

Nick Chubb had a 26-yard TD run for the Browns, who bounced back from a Week 1 loss at Kansas City to thrill their first capacity crowd at home since 2019.

Taylor completed 10 of 11 passes in the first half and had the Texans tied at 14-14. He was replaced in the second half by rookie Davis Mills.
