My Grandfather was injured in France during WWII and sent to army hospital where he was cared for by a military nurse who became my grandmother, Genevieve (Burns) Walker. 
My grandmother was a military nurse who cared for a solider who was wounded in France during WWII, Minter Walker. They married and became my grandparents. 
My 93 year old Uncle recently was greeted by the town of Venlo, The Netherlands. He had a dinner in his honor and was given a hero's welcome.

This is my grandfather Delbert Orsborne. He served onboard the heavy crustier Augusta as a boatswain's mate. He operated the eight-inch gun. He was even photographed having lunch with President Harry S. Truman. Our family settled in the Norfolk VA area after my grandfather's time in the military. 
My husband David Steele, of Mentor Ohio, served on the USS Donald Cook -DDG 75. He served from 2001-2007 and was stationed in Norfolk, VA.

USS Cromwell DE1014 
10th Air Force, 7th Bombardment Group (Heavy), 493rd Squard. He was Shot Down by the Japanese, Captured and taken as POW, died from neglect of burns, Buried in Burma, in 1946 his remains were put on a C47 to come home and that plane went down in bad weather and never found. (If you would ever want to hear the whole story contact me) The Plain Dealer has done 2 stories about him 
Honor flight 2017, and my husband died 2 days after we came back. A Vietnam vet that was never honored for his service found peace in the honor flight. God bless you David I miss you every day.

My grandmother raised 6 boys on her own and, in 1944, five of them were serving overseas in WWII at the same time- 2 in the USNavy, 3 in the USArmy. My father joined at 17 and my uncle Gil- the only brother still living- will be 99 in March. His son, also a veteran, was able to get him on an honor flight shortly after my dads death in 2015. As a mother myself, before the days of cell phones, Facebook, email and computers- I can’t imagine having 5 of your sons in harms way like that at the same time halfway across the world. All 5 brothers were very proud of their military service. As are all their children grandchildren and great- grandchildren.
