What’s in Season

With as hot as it’s been in Ohio, it’s tough to know what vegetables are in season. We invited Farmer Lee Jones from The Chef’s Garden, to the studio to help us out. According to Lee, it’s a great time to have tomatoes and squash.

Check out their non-profit organization, Veggie U’s, annual Food and Wine Celebration! Squash, tomatoes and other seasonal summer favorites will be the stars as chefs converge from all over the country to share a world of flavors with guests. In addition to being the culinary extravaganza of the summer, it is Veggie U’s primary fundraising effort to place more Veggie U kits in classrooms in Cleveland and beyond. The kit give kids the opportunity to grow and harvest a crop in their own classroom, so they can experience agriculture for themselves.

Your Health Today

Did you know that athletes in the U.S., both young and old, suffer more than one million concussions a year? Dr. Richard Figler joined Kristi to discuss the signs and symptoms of a concussion, and the steps to recovering from one.

Dr. Figler’s suggestions:

  • First, know that every concussion should be taken seriously
  • Your course of action- Rest and recover
  •  Physical rest – elevated heart rate can worsen symptoms
  •  Mental rest – simple tasks, such as texting, driving, reading, video games can all worsen symptoms.
  •  Early management typically means earlier return to play.
o The athlete does not return to play until they are taken through a graduated recovery process.
o Once their mental activity is back to their baseline, they can start physical activity slowly and progress as long as the symptoms do not return.
o  Athlete’s that are not completely back to normal and sustain another concussion can go from missing 1-2 weeks to missing 1-2 months or longer.
