BEACHWOOD, Ohio -- She’s a woman who has been guiding students down the right path for nearly four decades. And on her spare time, she cares for the most critical patients. She's a woman who has been blesses with not one, but two very-fulfilling careers and that is why Carole Katz is my Hometown Hero.

Katz is a math teacher at Beachwood High School. The Cleveland native has been teaching in the district for 37-years, and she says math and science have always been her passion--a passion that has spread to her most devoted pupils.

Beachwood Senior Yuxi Zheng says, “You can definitely tell the difference between a new teacher and an old teacher. You've got Mrs. Katz, she knows what she's doing, you can tell by how she's teaching. She knows what students are struggling with, and she can tailor her lessons towards students in general.”

“The goal is to take the kids from where they are and bring them beyond. So, if a student grows and matures and can handle something that when they first entered here they couldn't, that's great,” says Katz.

In addition to teaching honors math classes, attending her students’ sporting events and recitals, Katz is also a registered nurse. She now works part-time in the pediatric unit at Hillcrest Hospital.

Beachwood principal Robert Hardis says Katz is a role model for any educator, "... for a principal, for a teacher, anyone who works in education, she's a model."
