BURLINGTON, Vt. — They’re called “zombie bees,” and they’ve been spotted in the northeast part of the United States for the first time.
According to New York Daily News, the “zombie bees” were first discovered in 2008, and have popped up mostly in the western part of the country.
But it’s confirmed they’ve now been found in Burlington, Vermont.
The insects start as honey bees. Then, they’re infected by a parasitic fly, which lays eggs inside them.
The phenomena causes the honey bees to undergo neurological damage. They fly erratically and at night, according to New York Daily News.
When the eggs hatch, the flies crawl out of the bees’ bodies, and the bees die within five minutes, according to New York Daily News.
