Cleveland – Doesn’t it always seem your child gets sick at night or on the weekends, when the pediatrician’s office is closed? As we find out in this Your Child’s Health report, thanks to technology, the doctor is in seven days a week.
Sonya Shakir, a working mother of three, has found a new place for her children to see the doctor after hours and close to home. University Hospitals Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital operates HealthSpot. Similar to Skype or Facetime, tele-medicine brings the patient and the pediatrician together. But, the doctor is not actually there.
Dr. Andrew Hertz, Medical Director of Rainbow Care Connection explained how it works. “We’re simply putting a video connectivity between the patient and the family. And, we’re also able to use devices to actually examine the patient,” Dr. Hertz said
HealthSpot is for children ages two to 18. A medical attendant assists using interactive medical devices to help diagnose and treat common childhood ailments. “We can address many minor medical problems: earaches, sinus infections, conjunctivitis, lots of rashes, coughs and colds and urinary symptoms,” Dr. Hertz added.
Seven-year-old Genice Manning said she liked her first virtual doctor visit. “It was nice and cool and it looks like a space ship,” she said.
Her mom likes the convenience. HealthSpot is located at 6413 St. Clair Avenue, inside the National Slovenian Home. It is open weekday evenings from 5:30 to 11pm, and weekends from 1 to 11pm. “I am grateful that U.H. decided put the location here. It is again very convenient for the time,” Shakir said.
She also sees HealthSpot as a better option than going to the emergency room. “I like that when we’re being seen, I know that it is just us in that sterile bubble. So, we don’t have to worry about catching other things,” Shakir added.
Patients can also get a prescription or a note to return to school. Another HealthSpot is located in the East 55th and Quincy neighborhood, inside the Friendly Inn Settlement House at 2386 Unwin Road.
University Hospitals will be holding an Open House at the HealthSpot in the St. Clair neighborhood on Saturday, April 18th from 2 to 4 pm.
