SPRINGFIELD TWP, Ohio -  A young boy drowned in Springfield Lake in Springfield Township, near Akron,  late Saturday afternoon.

Police say that they were notified by a mother at 5:30 p.m. that her 8-year-old son was missing from Springfield Lakefront Park. He had last been seen 45 minutes earlier playing with ducks at the east end of the park. She had not seen him go into the lake at that time, although he had been swimming earlier.

According to Springfield Fire Captain Steve Simich, the call for rescue crews came in to them at 5:50 p.m. Coventry and Green fire departments assisted as part of the dive team.

The child was found within 10 minutes of the fire department's arrival about 30 feet from shore in 4 feet of water.

He was taken to Akron Children's Hospital, where he passed away.

His name has not been released pending notification of all of his family members.
