COBB COUNTY, Ga. — A mother in Georgia who has a child with severe disabilities is speaking out after finding a nasty note on her car accusing her of illegally parking in a handicapped spot.
WSB reports that Alyssa Steele was with her 5-year-old daughter, Jemma, at the time. Jemma has Chiari malformation, which is a condition where part of the brain comes out of the skull. Jemma has worn a helmet and leg braces for most of her life and has been on oxygen for more than one year.
Alyssa has a handicapped tag for the family’s SUV.
Last week, they were getting dinner and parked in a handicapped spot.
When they came out, they found a letter on their car.
“You are not handicapped. You are a sorry sack of [expletive]. Merry Christmas! I have reported your license tag to Cobb Sheriff’s Dept.”
She hopes that sharing her story will spread awareness about disabilities.
“I definitely was hurt and it made me question how people can do something like that, and I wanted to change the situation from how we are affected by that to how we can spread awareness on how other people are struggling with disabilities that are not seen to the eye,” Steele told WSB.
