ELYRIA, Ohio — A number of workers at Elyria Foundry have been temporarily laid off following a fire that damaged a portion of the facility Friday night.

The fire broke out around 10 p.m. Friday. The cause is still under investigation, but neighbors reported hearing explosions before seeing smoke and flames.

According to a release issued Tuesday, the company hasn’t yet been able to evaluate the extent of the damage, but that operations in the part of the building where the fire occurred will have to be temporarily shut down.

Due to that shut down, the release says “a number” of associates have been laid off.

“We care deeply about our associates and are doing what we can, such as continuing health insurance benefits and working to expedite the receipt of their unemployment benefits, to ease the burden of these circumstances,” the release states.

The release states, “We are working diligently to rebuild operations so our associates can return to work as soon as possible.”
