CLEVELAND-- Police have arrested a man for crashing a car into a west side Cleveland apartment complex nearly crushing two women sleeping inside.

Portia Smith says she heard a loud bang which was a Chevrolet Impala crashing into her ground floor studio apartment on West 131st street and Puritas Avenue around 3:30 Tuesday morning. Smith and her friend Velvia Whitmore barely escaped.

"It could really be a lot worse because the car was in the house. She was closer, my friend- she was closer to the car then I was. I snatched her up. The wheels were still spinning. The tires were still spinning on the car," Smith says.

The women are pretty banged up and both received several stitches. Luckily, they were sleeping on the floor when the car slammed into the ground floor apartment.

"If we were in a bed, I was told that we might have been crushed. The injuries would have been worse. It was good that we were on the floor. We were safer," says Whitmore.

One of their neighbors came to their rescue when he heard the crash.

"I came down here and see the car, lady was bleeding on her face and the car was kissing the other lady's face and she was bleeding real bad from the face. We immediately went in there and try and help them up," says Adama Brisco of Cleveland

Cleveland police say the Chevrolet Impala was driving southbound then jumped the curb and crashed into the building knocking through the window.

The driver of the car then got out and fled on foot. Cleveland police later caught up with the driver and arrested him.

Portia Smith, with the help of her neighbors, moved to another studio just a building away. Her new apartment is now safely on the second floor.
