PAINESVILLE, Ohio– For Denny Kochever of Painesville, every moment with his wife Carol is special.
But every moment is also a struggle.
“Carol is in stage four,” said Denny.
Carol Kochever, 55, has fought breast, lung, and brain cancer for over a year.
Doctors can do little.
“He put it to us this way. ‘Carol, you’ve been in a battle. You didn’t win the battle but you haven’t lost it yet. But you are beat up so bad, that I think it’s just better that you go home,'” said Denny.
Along with Hospice, Denny takes care of Carol.
But there’s something that Carol needs.
“My simple wish? I want my dog to be able to run. She loves to run,” said Carol.
Carol’s dying wish is to take care of her 3-year-old Dalmation, Sophey.
“I just want a fence. Just fence in my yard so my dog is happy. Simple. Nothing fancy,” said Carol.
It’s been tough for the Kochevers.
They’ve been married 30 years and have a 23-year-old daughter.
Four years ago, their house caught on fire.
“We lost everything. So, one day we decided to go out looking for a sofa. But instead, we found Sophey!” laughed Carol.
Sophie has been a constant companion as the family rebuilt their home and their lives.
“I feel like I’ve let her down. Because I’m retired and I didn’t have the money right at the time to build Sophie a fence for Carol. I always said I was going to do it for her and I never got it done,” cried Denny.
Denny has little time to fulfill that wish.
He takes care of Carol 24-7.
Meantime, Carol says that she knows Denny will take care of their daughter in the time ahead and she wants that same assurance for Princess Sophey.
“It would make me feel at ease. Knowing she is able to run free,” cried Carol.
“It would mean a lot to me. Right now, whatever I got left is with her. This is her dream. It’s been her dream,” said Denny.

They are also having a spaghetti benefit to help pay Carol’s medical bills on July 21 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Park Road Bar and Grill in Painesville.
