MIDDLEBURG HEIGHTS, OH — Who says good things don’t come to those who wait?

Mary Schmidt was $1,200 richer Wednesday and it’s all thanks to a trusty household appliance: her 1930 General Electric refrigerator.

The contest was sponsored by the Illuminating Company, highlighting its refrigerator recycle program.

When asked why she kept her parents’ fridge for so long, she had a very simple answer.

“It worked! And they weren’t rich people, and it was a good little refrigerator. Like I said, I just turned it off about 6 months ago because everyone, ‘oh it takes up so much electricity, save on electricity, turn it off, turn it off.’ So, that’s what I did,” said Schmidt.

Schmidt says she plans to use the money to replace an old freezer she has in the basement.
