ELYRIA, Ohio -- A Lorain woman was arrested for trying to bite her boyfriend's entire ear off.

"It was terrible. This part of his ear was split open and the skin was broken and it was bleeding and it looked like a "V" how she bit it, it was terrible," said Tom Stone.

Stone was a witness to an argument over a card game that turned very physical at an apartment complex on Bell Avenue in Elyria on Saturday night.

Stone said Ashley Plato, 24, was on top of her boyfriend Shawn Lane, trying to bite his right ear off.  Stone jumped into action to save his friend when he saw Plato attacking him.

"I grabbed her and pulled her off of him and get a better view and told her get out get out of my apartment. At that time, he went into the bathroom and he got a better look at it and he said it's bleeding real bad. I said yeah, you should go to the hospital," said Stone.

Stone rushed Lane to Elyria Memorial Hospital's emergency room were his right ear received 6 stitches.

Elyria Police arrested Ashley Plato and charged her with felony assault.

"She acknowledged that she bit his ear off," said Capt. Chris Constantino of the Elyria Police Department.

Some Elyria residents said they couldn't believe it when they heard about the ear biting incident.

"Just the fact, the extreme, that she used her own body to do some damage to another individual, he will be damaged for life," said Mirian Burks of Elyria.

"That's not normal human behavior you know, we don't bite, dogs do" said Michael Robinson of Elyria.

Plato was ordered by the court to stay away from her boyfriend Shawn.

She is being held at the Lorain County Jail and is due back in court next week.
