RUSSELL TOWNSHIP, Ohio -- Police say an 81-year-old woman found dead in the basement of her home was stabbed to death, and her grandson is being held in connection with her murder.
Ruth P. Phillips was found in her Cloveridge Road home in Russell Township on Tuesday.
Her 18-year-old grandson lived with her but was not at home when Phillips was discovered.
He was found and arrested at around 1 a.m. Wednesday in an abandoned house in the “Little Punderson” area of Geauga County. Prosecutors say he's being held in connection with Phillips' death, and was arrested on a probation violation.
Fox 8 News is withholding the suspect's name, pending charges.
According to police reports, Phillips was found after a friend of her's called police requesting a welfare check.
Court records show several criminal cases were filed against the grandson just last year, in which his grandmother was named as the complainant. Those included a felony theft charge and a misdemeanor unauthorized use of a vehicle charge.
However, neighbors tell Fox 8 they never sensed any trouble at the home.
"My family sees the comings and goings of all of the neighbors and I hadn't seen a young man over there," said Becky Hurt, who described the victim as a quiet, caring woman. "Lovely lady. She always had a smile, always had a wave loved the children in the area.
U.S. Marshals, state BCI, and Geauga County officials are investigating the case.
