WILLOWICK, Ohio- Willowick Police Department’s first K-9 has passed away.

Recon, who was imported from Germany, retired after eight years of service in April. Late last year, he was diagnosed with degenerative myelopathy, a disease that affects the spinal cord and causes dogs to lose their ability to walk. The decision was made to put him down.

Recon was trained in patrol and narcotics detection, but frequently did demonstrations at the Lake Farmpark and Willowick Public Library.

His handler Ptl. Dan Hirz said everyone should have the opportunity to own a dog like Recon once in their life.
