CHARLESTON, South Carolina — Dylann Roof, 21, is the suspect in Wednesday’s deadly shooting at the Emanuel AME Church in Charleston.

Authorities confirmed just before 11:30 a.m. that he was taken into custody.

Roof is from Lexington, South Carolina, more than 100 miles away from the shooting.

Authorities say he joined a prayer meeting at the historic black church and stayed for nearly an hour before he opened fire.

Nine people, including the church pastor, were killed.

In an image from the suspect’s Facebook page, Roof is wearing a jacket with what appears to be the flags of apartheid-era South Africa and nearby Rhodesia, a former British colony that was ruled by a white minority until it became independent in 1980 and changed its name to Zimbabwe.

Roof’s father recently bought him a .45-caliber gun for his 21st birthday, a senior law enforcement source briefed on the investigation told CNN.

Court records show that Roof has one felony drug case pending against him, a past misdemeanor trespassing charge and no other criminal record in the state.

The state and county court records show he had no adult criminal history in South Carolina until March, when he was arrested in Lexington County on felony drug possession charges. That case is pending. Count records list no attorney to try to reach for comment.

In April, state police say that Roof was arrested for misdemeanor trespassing in Lexington County. No further details on that charge were immediately available.
