BRITISH COLUMBIA, Canada– A group of kayakers got quite the surprise during a recent trip: a close encounter with humpback whales.

The group with Wildcoast Adventures was off British Columbia’s South Coast last week when it happened.

According to a video posted on YouTube, they saw a humpback nursing her calf and watched from a distance for 30 minutes.

Then, something happened that they didn’t expect. “We thought they were gone. And that’s when they really set off a show,” Heather Lawrence told CBC News. She videotaped some of the close encounter.

She said the baby jumped up first, then the mom– who was really close to them.

The kayakers paddled farther back after it happened.
