VERMILION, Ohio — The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal two-vehicle crash that happened Wednesday afternoon near the westbound exit ramp from the Ohio Turnpike to Baumhart Road in Lorain County.

Troopers say a semi-truck travelling westbound veered off the right side of the road, continued traveling through a grass gore, hit an embankment for the exit/entrance ramp lanes, vaulted over the lanes, struck a minivan and came to rest in a ditch off the side of the roadway.

The semi was carrying chemicals and had a fuel leak.

The semi then caught on fire while the driver was trapped inside.  The driver of the truck was killed, the coroner’s office reports.

A family of four was in the minivan during the crash, South Amherst Fire Dept. told FOX 8.  Authorities are uncertain of their injuries but say the family did walk away from their vehicle.

Officials are currently withholding the names of those involved in the crash, pending family notification.

The eastbound entrance and exit ramps at Exit 135, Baumhart Road, were closed following the crash.  They have since been reopened.
