Several non-profits are warning consumers not to pay for phony Refund Anticipation Loans that promise fast money from tax refunds.

Representatives of Neighborhood Housing Services of Greater Cleveland, Policy Matters Ohio, The United Way of Greater Cleveland, the Better Business Bureau, Cleveland Housing Network and the NHS Consumer Law Center have teamed up to offer free tax preparation in Cuyahoga County.

IRS trained volunteers will provide the assistance at 23 sites, called Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Sites.

“They have been trained in the latest IRS software and they will file your taxes electronically,” said Steve Wertheim, Director of 211 from the United Way of Greater Cleveland.

Refund Anticipation Loans, also known as Refund Anticipation Checks are often represented as a quick and inexpensive way to obtain tax refunds that are available free of charge.
