COLUMBUS, Ohio- Large crowds were gathering on High St. in Columbus after the Buckeyes became national champions again when they beat the Oregon Ducks, 42-20, Monday night.

FOX 8's P.J. Ziegler, who covered all the excitement surrounding the game down in Columbus, tweeted after the win that police were quick to disperse crowds by using pepper spray.

The Columbus Fire Department says 89 fires were reported near Ohio State's campus in the hours after the Buckeyes won the first national title game in college football's playoffs.

Battalion Chief Tracy Smith says the Tuesday morning fires involved trash bins, Dumpsters and couches, and no injuries were reported.

Smith says the reports started coming in just before 1 a.m. with the last reported about 4:45 a.m.

Police made a handful of arrests early Tuesday after using tear gas and pepper spray to disperse some Ohio State students and football fans who spilled by the thousands into the streets to celebrate.
