PERKINS TWP., Ohio -- Surveillance cameras captured the frightening moments when a speeding car crashed through the front doors of a local sporting goods store without stopping until it came to rest at the back of the store.
The crash happened just minutes before the Dick's Sporting Goods store on Milan Road was scheduled to close on Thursday.
"There were employees in the store. There were customers in the store, so business as usual. It was getting close to closing time but again the store was open for business and it was occupied," said Perkins Twp. Police Chief Kenneth Klamar.
The surveillance video shows two customers leaving the store just as the crash happens, dodging out of the way of the speeding car.
Klamar said just before the car smashed through the front doors, it had to go through obstacles designed to stop a vehicle traveling 40mph.
"This vehicle crashed right through them and it probably slowed it some, but from watching the video, not by much at all; so it leads me to believe that vehicle was well in excess of 50-55 miles per hour," said Klamar.
Police photographs show display racks, mannequins and merchandise littering the store along the cars path.
The Cadillac came to rest after finally crashing through a shoe display, taking out a back wall.
Klamar said the 78-year-old driver from Sandusky may have suffered a medical condition that contributed to the crash.
The driver was not charged.
Managers at the store would not comment, but Klamar said insurance will cover the damage and the store was back open by the next afternoon.
"Once I saw the video, to see actually how close they were and to get an idea of how fast the vehicle was going, it's truly amazing," said Klamar, adding, "It's frightening having been in that store myself but somebody was watching out for everybody that day."
