AKRON, Ohio — For the second time in history at the Akron Zoo, two snow leopard cubs have been welcomed into the world.
According to a release from the zoo, a male and a female were born at the zoo on April 14.
They’re not in an exhibit yet, but in a cubbing area with their mother, Shanti. They should be able to go to an exhibit by the end of June or early July.
Snow leopards are endangered, according to the zoo.
Right now, the cubs weigh about 6 pounds. They were born weighing about one and a half pounds each. At six weeks old, their eyes are open, they can walk, and they are starting to climb.
The father’s name is Roscoe. Roscoe and Shanti had another litter at the zoo back in 2012.
The zoo is planning to announce details of a naming contest in the next few weeks.
