SPRINGFIELD TWP., Ohio — An anonymous tip helped investigators to recover a vehicle that may have been involved in a hit-skip accident that killed a Springfield Twp. teenager.
According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the vehicle was found in Portage County and forensic evidence will be used to confirm its involvement in the crash.
As of Friday morning, the driver was still unknown.
Autopsy results showed the victim, Anthony Weakland, 16, died from blunt force trauma to the head.
He was going into his sophomore year at Springfield High School in Summit County.
According to family members, around 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Weakland was on his way to his sister’s house.
Troopers said Weakland and a 15-year-old boy were walking east along the shoulder of Albrecht Avenue in Springfield Twp. when he was hit from behind.
Loved ones are pleading for the driver to come forward.
“Do with your children everything you can possibly do because you never know when they’re going to be taken away,” said Weakland’s aunt, Linda Edgington.
“He was like a brother to me, it’s hard to think you could lose somebody that fast, especially that young,” said Weakland’s friend, Ashley Lynn Smith.
Family members say an Anthony Weakland memorial fund has been set up. Donations can be made at any First Merit Bank.
