Van carrying Columbus-area high school water polo team involved in fatal crash

RICHFIELD TOWNSHIP, Ohio-- A van carrying members of a high school water polo team and their family members was involved in a deadly crash in western Ohio Friday morning.

A van and a truck crashed on state Route 65 and state Route 281 in Richfield Township in Henry County at about 10 a.m. According to WBNS in Columbus, one person was killed and five others were injured.

Victims were taken to Toledo-area hospitals by medical helicopter, reported WTOL in Toledo.

The Worthington City School District released the following statement:

"Thomas Worthington and Worthington Kilbourne High School water polo teams were traveling to an out-of-town tournament this morning. Unfortunately, there was a serious automobile accident with a van carrying WKHS girls and family members. We do not know the condition of those in that van, but we do know there were life-threatening injuries."

The district also said counselors will be available to students.
