(CNN) — The United States is providing $860,000 to the families of people allegedly killed and injured by a U.S. soldier, two Afghanistan provincial council members said Sunday.
The money includes $50,000 for each of 16 people who were killed, as well as $11,000 for each who was injured, the council members said.
Kandahar provincial council member Haji Nyamat Khan said the money was paid in Afghan currency, and that a U.S. representative said the money was not considered compensation, but rather the U.S. government offering help to victims and their families.
A senior U.S. official said Army Staff Sgt. Robert Bales will be charged with 17 counts of murder, although 16 people were reported killed in the incident.
