AKRON, Ohio — It has been decades since the death of a pregnant Akron woman was ruled a suicide.
But police now believe Margaret Anne Purk was murdered, and the suspect is her husband, Scott Purk.
His trial begins today.
Purk is already serving 28 years for burning down his own home in Stow to collect insurance money. Police say his children were in the home at the time and were nearly killed. He was convicted of arson, insurance fraud and attempted murder.
While the home was on fire, Scott Purk randomly brought up his first wife’s death out of the blue to an officer on scene. It’s that officer that then decided to look into Margaret’s case again.
It was ruled a suicide by hanging, but police had always questioned Scott Purk’s story. They exhumed Margaret Anne’s body and determined she was strangled by something, possibly a belt, before she was hanged.
Purk now faces murder and tampering with evidence charges.
