HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA — A Southern California teen broke down in tears after being crowned homecoming queen Friday night at Marina High School.
Cassidy Lynn Campbell, who was born male but identifies as female, won by popular vote, according to Reuters.
The 16-year-old says she hopes her victory will inspire others.
Her victory comes just one month after Governor Jerry Brown signed a law allowing transgender students to pick which restrooms to use. Transgender students also get to choose between girls’ or boys’ sports teams.
