CLEVELAND — A familiar face was up to his old ways at Progressive Field on Friday night as Jim Thome and the Baltimore Orioles thumped the Cleveland Indians 10-2.

Thome was 3-5 with a home run, his first as a member of the Orioles. The blast was the 610th of his career–good enough to pass Sammy Sosa for 7th all-time.

The Orioles struck first on a Derek Lowe wild pitch which gave Baltimore a 1-0 lead.  Asdrubal Cabrera tied the game up in the bottom half of the inning with his 12th home run of the season–a solo shot to right.

Baltimore owned the third and fourth inning, scoring a combined eight runs. Indians’ starting pitcher Derek Lowe was roughed up. He lasted just three innings, gave up seven hits, nine runs and two home runs.

The Orioles belted out 11 hits. Cleveland scored its only other run on a Jack Hannahan home run in the seventh.  Cleveland has lost five of their last seven.

Before Friday’s game, the Indians called up Cody Allen from Columbus. He made his Major League debut. He threw one inning of work, gave up two walks and had one strike out.

The Indians remain three games back of Chicago who lost to Detroit 4-2 on Friday night.

Game Two of the series with Baltimore is Saturday at 7:05 at Progressive Field.
