MAYFIELD VILLAGE, Ohio – While some kids are studying from textbooks or writing essays, students at Excel Tecc are working on something a little different.
They’re building prosthetic hands.
"Never do our kids our says why are we doing this? You know, it's tied directly to real life and it's just the most rewarding thing that I have done in my career,” said Craig Schmidt.
He’s the teacher for the CADD Engineering and Technology program. He said he got the idea for the project from a French teacher in the district. She showed him a video about 3D prosthetic hands.
"I looked it and said, we can do this!" he recalls.
And so they did, with the help of a 3D printer.
"It's really incredible because for one, because of the devices that we make and number two, the process,” said student Michael Tuly. “It's much more than just 3D printed hands and artificial limbs. This is the future. This truly is the future.”
Once all the parts are made, they have to put everything together.
Mr. Schmidt said a team of students built the first one and now those same students are teaching the rest of the class how to do it.
He said the students eventually plan to submit the hand to a company for review. If they get the okay, they’ll be able to give to local recipients.
"This hand only costs $35 dollars to construct versus 8 -10,000 for a commercially available hand,” he said.
