DENVER (KDVR.com) — AURORA, Colo. — The mother of a woman who lost her life as well as a man who was wounded in the Aurora theater tragedy a month ago have obtained the counsel of the lawyer who led Casey Anthony’s defense team. Both could be filing lawsuits soon.
Attorney Jose Baez, who secured a not-guilty verdict for Anthony in a well-publicized murder trial regarding the death of her 2-year-old daughter Caylee a year ago, is now representing Shirley Wygal, the mother of Rebecca Wingo, and Marcus Weaver, who was shot in the shoulder during the attack and with Wingo when she died.
It has been exactly a month since the shooting.
Wygal told TMZ last month that she believes the Century 16 theater in Aurora is partially to blame for the death of her daughter at a shooting during the premiere of “The Dark Knight Rises.”
At the time of that previous statement, Wygal said she had obtained legal counsel headed by a different attorney, Keith Davidson, and that she was going to “weigh” her “legal options.”
Wygal has has said she believes the theater’s exit doors should have been alarmed, or there should have been security guards posted next to them for a premiere as anticipated as “The Dark Knight Rises.”
Police said suspected gunman James E. Holmes entered the midnight movie premiere armed and undetected through emergency exit doors in the front of the theater. Century 16 cinemas said the theater sometimes employed security guards to man the door, but chose not to have those guards on hand on the night of the attack.
It now appears Weaver, who had gunshot pellets removed from his shoulder two weeks ago, and Wygal may be getting closer to filing a lawsuit.
“If an entity had an obligation to protect the innocent and did not, then every survivor and loved one left behind must hold them accountable,” Wygal told TMZ. “The first step is a timely and thorough investigation. I’ve engaged a firm large enough to help us all.”
Physically uninjured moviegoer Torrence Brown, Jr. remains the only individual pursuing legal action regarding the shooting. Brown is suing the movie theater along with Warner Bros. and Holmes’ doctors.
