CLEVELAND — Like many Fox 8 viewers, Dana Depew sees anchor Wilma Smith nearly every day, but doesn’t know her personally.
Until recently, he had never met her, but that didn’t stop him from creating an entire art exhibit about the Northeast Ohio icon.
In fact, not knowing Wilma was his inspiration.
“I thought it would be an interesting body of work to create something from a person that I only know from being on the news,” said Depew, a Medina native.
Thus, The Wilma Smith Project was born, featuring Wilma as the subject.
The project also explores the lines between personal and public personas.
The exhibit opened at the Brandt Gallery in Tremont on Saturday.
“You never think that something like this would happen,” Wilma said at the opening reception. “Dana just went to so much an extreme expense with his time and caring and thoughtfulness in putting this together. I’m truly touched and honored, I really am.”
Cleveland City Councilman Joe Cimperman also attended the event as the city declared the day Wilma Smith Day.
