SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP, Ohio — A local woman entered a not guilty plea after she was arrested and charged in connection with a fatal hit-skip accident.
Last Tuesday, 16-year-old Anthony Weakland was struck by a car while he was walking with a friend on Albrecht Avenue in Springfield Township.
Friday morning, 46-year-old Dianna Vandyne, of Mogadore, was arraigned in Akron Municipal Court on charges of felony hit-skip and tampering with evidence.
“It’s just a huge weight lifted off my shoulders,” said Anthony’s older sister Allison Weakland. “They told us they had a strong lead, so we kept our faith they would find somebody.”
Vandyne has a lengthy criminal record. Summit County court records show in 2006, she was convicted of possession of cocaine and falsification. According to the clerk from Akron Municipal Court, Vandyne was also found guilty of driving under the influence in 2002.
The Ohio Highway Patrol says Vandyne was picked up on a warrant after someone else gave a tip.
“I want her to see what she’s done to our family; that’s what I want her to realize — that she’s took somebody we can never replace. She needs to be brought to justice and I have total confidence that the justice system will prevail,” said Weakland.
Vandyne is being held on a $100,000 bond. She is scheduled to back in court on August 10 for a hearing at the Summit County Common Pleas Court.
