BAKERSFIELD, CA – A 19-year-old Jack-in-the-Box employee claims that he was fired from his job because he gave a free taco to a veteran.
Alex Mesta says that he has given the veteran, a regular customer, free coffee in the past. And one night, he gave the man two tacos. The tacos retail for 99 cents, and were leftover items at the end of the day. Those type of items usually get thrown out.
His gesture was caught on surveillance video, prompting someone from corporate to let him go for “mishandling funds,” reports Fox News Edge.
A Facebook post about this went viral:
For their part, Jack-in-the-Box corporate communications released a statement saying that Mesta was terminated for previous rule infractions and not the incident with the free tacos.
“We too are grateful to our veterans and to the men and women currently serving in the armed forces. Regarding this incident, while it would not be appropriate to provide complete details on an internal disciplinary issue, our actions in this case were not based on just one incident and had nothing to do with the guest’s military experience.”
