CHARDON, Ohio– The  Willoughby-Eastlake City Schools superintendent plead guilty Wednesday afternoon to misdemeanor traffic charges including OVI.

Stephen Thompson, 48, appeared in Chardon Municipal Court with his attorney, Kenneth Callahan, for the brief hearing.

Thompson has said he is very remorseful and regrets his actions. He said he shouldn’t have been driving that night.

Thompson was arrested on the charges in the early morning hours of May 17,  following a car crash at the corner of state Route 306 and Mayfield Road in Chester Township.

Police dash camera video shows Thompson being pulled over, and taking a number of field sobriety tests. Shortly after he took the tests, he was arrested. He’ll be sentenced on July 9.

The school board met Wednesday night and decided on the following punishment: Thompson must forfeit 20 days of pay; he must speak to students; and he can be fired if he’s convicted of another alcohol or drug-related offense.
