QUEENS, New York — Throughout the streets of the city there are billboards touting the biggest superheros of summer, Batman and Spiderman. Then there is Delroy Simmonds.

“I don’t really feel much of a hero. I’m a father, so I would have did the same thing for my child as I hope someone would have done for mine,” said Simmonds a day after his life saving heroics.

On Tuesday, the 30-year-old father of two was on the Fulton Street train platform in Brooklyn. He was waiting for the J-train to take him to a job interview. Unemployed for more than a year, he was anticipating a life changing day.

And he got it.

It happened when the life of 9-month-old David Zamara flashed before him. Simmonds watched as a wind gust pushed the child’s stroller onto the tracks.

Simmonds said, “I didn’t really think, I reacted.”

He did so by jumping onto the tracks as the train was pulling into the station. Miraculously he and the child got out before the train stopped short.

Simmonds visited Zamara at Brookdale Hospital during the lunch hour. He saw the 9-month-old, “running around laughing and playing.”

When asked if the boy recognized him? “They’re young but they don’t really recognize too much, but he’s alright that’s the main thing,” said Simmonds, who added, “Yeah he played with me a little, beat me up with the balloon, but everything is alright.”

As for that job interview that he didn’t make the train for? A call was made and he got a chance to interview at JFK Wednesday morning.

The result?

“I start in two weeks in maintenance at the airport,” smiled Simmonds.

Karma, whether good or bad always comes around.

In this case it was very good.
