STRONGSVILLE, Ohio — A teacher who was picketing outside of Center Middle School on Wednesday was arrested.
According to the Strongsville Police Department, he was part of a group that had been blocking a car from entering the driveway.
An officer monitoring the activity along Pearl Road said the group had already been advised three times not to interfere with traffic.
On a fourth occasion, the group continued to block a vehicle, the officer said.
Ian Steffan, 37, of Medina, was arrested shortly after 5:30 a.m. and charged with disorderly conduct.
He is a science teacher at Center Middle School.
The officer said Steffan had received warnings over the past two days in addition to the multiple times on Wednesday.
His case was referred to the Berea Municipal Court where he is expected to appear on March 25 at 9:30 a.m.
Nearly 400 members of the Strongsville Education Association hit the picket line on Monday after operating without a contract for months.
Negotiations between the Board of Education and teachers union fell apart and salary and working conditions are said to be among the issues.
The superintendent told Fox 8 that no new talks have been scheduled, although both sides said they are willing to return to the table.
“It’s unfortunate, it really is unfortunate,” said Tracy Linscott, the SEA president. “The ball’s in the Board’s court. We gave them a counter offer to their last best offer and we have not heard anything from them.”
Substitutes have been filling the void in the classrooms.
