STREETSBORO, Ohio - Streetsboro police say two officers pulled a woman from a car that was sinking in the Liberty Park Lake Tuesday.
According to police, officers Matt Plesz and Jason Sackett swam out to the vehicle.
A bystander also swam out to help.
The officers worked together to pull the woman through the sunroof.
Police say they initially thought she accidentally drove in the pond but upon arrival realized the woman was suicidal.
"When she was fighting with them to not be rescued, it would have been very easy for them to get sucked into that vehicle as it was sinking," said Lieutenant Patricia Wain.
The lieutenant with the department for nearly three decades says this is the first time she can recall an incident similar to this one. She praised not only her colleagues at the department but the good Samaritan at the park who jumped in the water to assist with the rescue.
"We're in an age where people like to videotape things and record things on their phones and Mr. Olesinski jumped in to help immediately and was out there to help before our officers even arrived," said Lt. Wain. "As a community, we're extremely proud of all three of them."
According to police, the woman was pulled from her vehicle moments before it was fully submerged. She was taken to the hospital for evaluation.
