CLEVELAND -  Lockdown at a local high school.

Cleveland police are gathering clues after gunfire breaks out near East Tech High School, piercing a glass door.

"All we heard was like five or six shots...she was like 'baby what's that? I was like, it's somebody shooting," said Richard Mallory.

Mallory lives on Scovill Avenue, right across the street from the school.  Cleveland police say around 3:00 p.m. Monday, they received a report of a shooting near the school, around the same time students were about to be dismissed for the day.

"About 15 minutes later, parking lot gets swarmed by police, everybody out here, police asking questions about...did we hear the shooting, who was out here, did we see anybody?" Mallory said.

The school was immediately placed on lockdown.  When officers arrived, they found that at least one round had gone through a glass door near the back of the building.

"The important thing is that no students were injured and, you know, the school staff did a great job of keeping the kids inside and safe until we deemed it appropriate to go ahead and release," said Cleveland police Sgt. Jennifer Ciaccia.

Police say witnesses gave them a vague description of the people involved.

"It doesn't look like it's actually in connection with the school, but it was in the vicinity of the school," Ciaccia said.

"They always shooting over here...they shoot over here, they shoot over there," said resident Ronda Dennis.

We can't even walk the streets freely without somethin' going on," said a resident.

"Senseless man," said another.

School officials say students were dismissed safely and without any incidents.  Investigators say they will continue to look around the area for witnesses or possible surveillance video that might offer some clues.

"Our officers will remain on scene and in contact with the Cleveland Municipal School District safety forces in order to ensure the safety of the school...we'll continue also to give special attention to the area round the school," said Sgt. Ciaccia.
